Velma Holt

Holt, Velma E. (Young), 89, died March 27, 2014 at Overlook Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Harry Holt for 61 years. She was a daughter of the late Willoughby and Emily (Chadwick) Young.

Velma was a schoolteacher at the William Windsor and Anna McCabe Schools in Smithfield for 38 years, retiring in 1984. A 1946 graduate of the RI College of Education (Now Rhode Island College), she was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma, Eta Chapter. She was a member of the NEA, the Blackstone Valley Retired Teachers Association, and the RI State Retired Teachers Association. She was a parishioner of the Berean Baptist Church, where she was Sunday School Superintendent for 25 years. She was also a 50 year member of the Queen of Sheba Lodge, OES #10 of Scituate. When wintering in Ft. Myers, FL, she was a member of the Ladies Oriental Shrine.

Velma leaves a sister, Dorothy Spaulding of Foster, and four nephews, Malcolm Spaulding of Wakefield, Myron Spaulding of Maine, Bruce Holt of North Scituate, and Brian Holt of Maine, and was the aunt of the late Marilyn Spaulding.

A graveside service will be held Friday at 10:30AM in Acotes Hill Cemetery in Chepachet. Calling hours will be Thursday 6-8 PM in the Robbins Funeral Home, 2251 Mineral Spring Ave, North Providence.
