Thomas K. O’Mara, 82, of Smithfield, passed away on July 5, 2023 at the Hopehealth Hospice Inpatient Center after a three-year courageous battle with cancer. Born in Providence, he was a son of the late William and Lillian (Haggerty) O’Mara.
Thomas was appointed to the Providence Fire Department in August 1963. He worked his way up the ranks, retiring as a Battalion Chief in October 2000. He had worked in various stations in Providence, including Lasalle Square, Atwells Ave., and Messer St. He had also served in the Coast Guard Reserves.
Thomas was an amazing father and grandfather, and was adored by his grandkids.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Joan O' Mara, his children, Kerion O’Mara (Ret. PPD) and his wife Carol, Susan Flynn, and Alison O'Mara and her husband Jason McNees, his stepdaughter, Cynthia Lotito, five grandchildren, Elisha O’Mara, Ryan O’Mara and his wife Joanna, Thomas O’Mara II, Hannah Flynn, and Kerion Flynn, a great-grandson, Collin O’Mara, and his brother, William O’Mara. He was the brother of the late Maureen Laurie.
His funeral will be held on Friday at 8:45 am from the Robbins Funeral Home, 2251 Mineral Spring Ave., North Providence with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am in St. Philip Church, 622 Putnam Pike, Greenville. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Park, Johnston. Calling hours Thursday 4-7 pm.
