Stuart Leathers

January 11, 1968 — November 13, 2022

North Providence

Stuart Ivory Leathers passed away unexpectedly in his home on Sunday, November 13th, 2022. He is survived by his mother, Janice Leathers, his two older sisters, Janelle Patefield and Cara Leathers, his longtime girlfriend, Lisa Brochu, and his two children and their spouses, Matthew and Cassondra Leathers, and Amanda and Steven Weiss. The friends he is survived by are numerous, and the impact of this loss is immeasurable for many.

Stuart was born at the Newport Naval Hospital in 1968, and spent his boyhood days in Rhode Island, Maine, and Virginia. He joined the Air National Guard immediately after graduating Toll Gate High School, and throughout his career was able to make lifelong friends, and travel to exotic places, like Egypt and Mississippi. After being honorably discharged in 1994, Stuart was able to apply his military training to a career with Cellular One, where he continued to work for almost thirty years. He most enjoyed working with his hands, trouble shooting problems, and the opportunity to use his long daily drives to call up friends and family to chat.

Stuart was a man of many interests; he could be just as happy on a meandering river in a kayak as he was in his arm chair, listening to records, or reading a science fiction novel. Those who knew him enjoyed his sense of humor, and often fell victim to his sarcasm, puns, and practical jokes. He had a joyful laugh that could lighten any heart. Stuart could also be very serious, a trusted confidant with open ears and a supportive shoulder. You could always count on him for thoughtful and empathetic advice, or turn to him in a time of need, for he would always do anything in his power to help a loved one, or even an acquaintance or stranger. Stuart was known for feeding the homeless, standing up against racism and sexism, and being the sturdy rock at the center of whatever issue with which he was faced.

The loss of Stuart is insurmountable, but his love, joy, and laughter will always be found and felt where nature prevails, where kindness reigns, and where love is put above all else.

Visitation Sunday 12-4 pm in the Robbins Funeral Home, 2251 Mineral Spring Ave., North Providence.
