Caldarone, Romeo "Cal", 93, of Riverview Dr., died peacefully on October 8, 2010 at Heritage Hills Nursing Centre. He was the husband of the late Mildred (Banick) Caldarone. Born in Providence on November 30, 1916, he was the son of the late Domenico and Giulietta (Marra) Caldarone.
He served in the United States Navy during WWII and following an honorable discharge, "Cal" became a meat cutter for First National Stores. He was elected Business Representative of the Meat Cutters and Food Store Workers Union Local 328 AFL-CIO in 1951 and in 1973 became president of the union. In 1977 Governor J. Joseph Garrahy appointed "Cal" Director of the Rhode Island Department of Labor and, after eight distinguished years, retired in 1985.
Since 1993, following the death of his wife, "Cal" has resided with his bereaved son Richard and daughter-in-law Lynda Caldarone of North Providence. He also leaves his sisters Evelyn Canning of Providence and Madeline Hammond of North Providence, and step-daughter Ellen Bosquet of Woonsocket as well as loving grandchildren and great grandchildren.
