Salvo, Nicholas "Nick the Baker", 91, of Mineral Spring Ave., a self-employed bread deliveryman, died February 5, 2010 at South County Hospital. A lifelong resident of North Providence, he was a son of the late Salvatore and Antonina (Lucca) Salvo.

An Army veteran of WWII, Nick was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for heroic achievement in action against the enemy on Ie Shima, Kerama Retto, by Maj. Gen. A.D. Bruce, commanding general, 77th (Statute of Liberty) Infantry Division. He was a member of a unit attacking Iegusuguyama. When a machine gun opened fire on his squad, wounding one of the men and forcing the remainder to take cover, Pvt. Salvo ran to the flank of the pillbox from which the fire was coming and threw a grenade into the aperture. He succeeded in knocking out the enemy position enabling his unit to continue the advance. Nick also received the Purple Heart for wounds suffered in the battle for Okinawa. He was authorized to wear the Sharpshooter Marksmanship Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Expert Infantry and Combat Infantry Badges, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with star and arrowhead, the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with three battle stars, a three-year hash mark, and two overseas stripes.

Nick is survived by a sister, Anna DeCotis and her husband, John, of Sebastian, FL, and many nieces and nephews. He was brother of the late Josephine, Joseph, Anthony Salvo, Helen Fulco, and Mary Messore.

His funeral will be held Tuesday at 10 am from the Robbins Funeral Home, 2251 Mineral Spring Ave., North Providence with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am in St. Anthony Church, North Providence. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Francis Cemetery, Pawtucket. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Home and Hospice Care of RI, 1085 North Main St., Providence, RI 02904 or South County Hospital, 100 Kenyon Ave., Wakefield, RI 02879.
