Newman, Kathryn M. (Young), 75, of Hamden, Connecticut and Hilton Head Island, South Carolina passed away unexpectedly on Thursday July 26, 2018. She was the loving wife of James D. Newman. Born in North Providence, RI, she was the daughter of the late Raymond L. and Catherine Ann (Pickett) Young.
Kathy received her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and spent her academic career teaching at various elementary and institutional schools, most of her 30 year academic career was at Southern Connecticut State University in the Department of Special Education where she coordinated the Educateur program for the training of teachers in residential treatment centers for the emotionally disturbed. Various roles during her tenure included: teacher training, department chair, associate dean of education and various other roles supporting future special education educators. She was an active member in many academic/professional organizations: American Association of University Professors; American Association of University Women; and Delta Kappa Gamma where she held various board positions including president. Retiring as Professor Emeritus from SCSU, she and her husband moved to Hilton Head Island, SC where she was active in the camera club; homeowners’ associations; volunteered for Volunteers in Medicine Hilton Head Island and Literacy Volunteers of the Low Country and was a member of the E-Z Riders bicycle club.
She loved visiting with family and friends, traveling abroad and cruising, reading, gardening, and was always excited to learn new and interesting things.
Besides her husband she is survived by three sisters, Barbara Maggiacomo and Gail Murray of RI, MaryLou Gebhardt of NC, brothers Carl Young of TN, and Raymond Young of CA (deceased); 11 nieces and nephews, many grand-nieces and nephews, 4 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday August 11, 2018 from 11:00 a.m. to 12p.m. followed by a service at Noon in the Robbins Funeral Home, 2251 Mineral Spring Avenue North Providence, RI. Burial will take place in the Young Family Cemetery, Johnston. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the SCSU Foundation 501 Crescent Street New Haven, CT 06515.
