Corte, John J. 90, of Smithfield Rd. died January 5, 2013 at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital. He was the husband of Florence (Durand) Corte. Born in Smithfield, he was a son of the late Francis and Maria (Jardin) DeCorte.
John was a former Chief of the Georgiaville Fire Department and former Special police officer in Smithfield. He was a member of the Smithfield Lodge of Elks, Portuguese American Club of Georgiaville, and member of Teamsters Local 251. He had worked for Lincoln Downs for many years. John was a communicant of Mary, Mother of Mankind Church. He served in the European Theater during WWII, where he received a purple heart. He was an avid bingo player.
Besides his wife he's survived by two daughters, Janet Mooney of North Providence, and Debra Boisvert of Albany, NH, six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, and a sister Mary DeCorte of North Providence. He was the father of the late Susan M. Mariotti, and brother of the late Ida, Manuel, Alfred and Joseph DeCorte and Ludwina Rebello.
His funeral will be held Thursday at 9 AM from the Robbins Funeral Home, 2251 Mineral Spring Ave. North Providence, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10AM in Mary, Mother of Mankind Church, 25 Fourth St. North Providence. Burial with military honors will follow in Highland Memorial Park, Johnston. Calling hours Wednesday 4-7 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mary, Mother of Mankind Church.
