John Cafferty, Sr.

Cafferty, John A. Sr., 93, died July 14, 2013 at the Goldencrest Nursing Center. He was the husband of Grace K. (Forgue) Cafferty. Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Francis H. Cafferty Sr., and the late Helen V. (Mahoney) Cafferty.

John worked for the former Nicholson File Company until 1959. He then was a letter carrier for the US Postal Service until retiring in 1984. He was a US Army veteran of WWII. He was a member of the Roy Carpenter's Beach Association. Mr. Cafferty was high school sports official in basketball, football and baseball, and was a founding member of the North Providence West Little League. He was player-manager for the town's fast pitch softball team that went on to win five state championships. He was inducted into the North Providence Sports Hall of Fame in 1990, where he also served as a member of the board. At one time he was offered a minor league contract with the Philadelphia Athletics baseball team.

Besides his wife he leaves a son, John A. Cafferty, Jr. and his wife Terry Lee, two daughters, Wendy Lucas, and Pamela Lombardi, and seven grandchildren, April Rose, Justin, and Daniel Lucas, David and Derek Lombardi, Shane and Jackson Cafferty, and a sister Carol Mason. He was brother of the late Francis Cafferty, Jr., William Cafferty, Anne Smith, and Mary Sharpe.

His funeral will be held Wednesday at 8:45 AM from the Robbins Funeral Home, 2251 Mineral Spring Ave, North Providence, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM in Mary Mother of Mankind Church, 25 Fourth St. Burial with military honors will be in the RI Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Calling hours are Tuesday 4-8 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Roy Carpenter's Beach Association Scholarship Fund.
