Browning, John E. 84, of Belcourt Ave. died Sunday September 15, 2013 at Roger Williams Medical Center. He was the husband of Marion (Schmidt) Browning. Born November 16, 1928 in Topeka, KS, he was a son of the late Rev. G. Lynn and Edna (Guild) Browning.
The son of missionaries, John spent his childhood in Iran before returning to the United States to finish his education at Ohio State and the University of Michigan. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a professor of history at Rhode Island College, a member of the World Affairs Council of RI, and led the Great Decisions program in RI.
Besides his wife of 58 years, he is survived by his children: Alan and his wife Eileen, Douglas, Stuart and his wife Cindy, and Jennifer (Hafner) and her husband John; seven grandchildren: Alex, Catherine, Evan, Alyssa, Kristina, Timothy and JohnPeter; his siblings: George, Myrtle (Fulton), William, Frank, and Frances (White); and many nieces and nephews.
Services are at Robbins Funeral Home, 2251 Mineral Spring Ave, North Providence, with calling hours Friday, September 20, 2013 from 4-7 PM and a funeral service on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at 10 AM. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shinn Study Abroad Fund, c/o Rhode Island College, 600 Mt Pleasant Ave, Providence, RI, 02908.
