James Cooney, Jr.

Cooney, James E. Jr., "Bobby", 77, of Stillwater Rd., died Saturday, November 22, 2014 at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center after a long illness. Born in Providence, on April 19, 1937, he was the son of the late James E. Cooney, Sr. and the late Lea (Brunelle) Cooney.

Bobby was a lifelong resident of Smithfield. He was a superintendent for the United States Postal Service, Turnkey office, in Providence, and managed the USPS softball team for many years before retiring in 1992. He was a graduate of La Salle Academy and the University of Rhode Island. He was an avid sports fan who enjoyed cowboy movies and crossword puzzles.

He is survived by his godchild, Michele Mello, and his cousins Kevin Lavender and Sheryl Canis of Smithfield, and Melissa Curtis of Cumberland.

Funeral services will be private.
