Evelyn Hurley

Evelyn Hurley, 83, of Smithfield, died on Saturday, February 27, 2021 at Miriam Hospital in Providence. She was born in Smithfield, the daughter of the late Joseph and Christine (Pimental) Enos. She leaves her husband, John Hurley of 63 years, having been together since they were thirteen years old. Evelyn was happiest when she had a job to do or if she could be of any help to anyone who needed it. She had an amazing work ethic, which she passed on to her children. Evelyn worked for Mine Safety Appliances in Esmond for 30 years before they moved their operations. She then worked at a temporary placement agency until retirement age. Even after she retired, she always had a job, well into her late seventies. At first, Evelyn, the ever devoted daughter, took on the full time and complete care of her elderly mother. After her mother passed away in 2005, Evelyn worked as a receptionist/ secretary at the North Providence Foot and Ankle and Associates. She worked there for about ten years, quitting only because she became ill with cancer and needed to focus on getting well. Throughout her illness, she remained the tireless caregiver to her husband and family. Through a lot of faith, positive thoughts, tenacity, and a strong will to live, she survived cancer, only to face several heart related and vascular problems in the aftermath of her illness. She is survived by her children, who will miss her more than words can say: Laurie and her husband Raymond Zinno of Johnston, John Hurley, Jr. of Smithfield, Michael Hurley of Smithfield, Karen Cicatiello and her husband Thomas of Harrisville, Lynn Archambault and her husband William of Worthington, Massachusetts, and her grandchildren: Jenna Zinno of Cumberland, Amy Zinno of Johnston, Raymond Zinno of Johnston, Jordan Hurley of Smithfield, Shannon and Elizabeth Hurley of Brooks, Maine, Megan (and Peter) Jeffrey of Coventry, Caitlyn (and Kyle) Fraielli of Sturbridge, Massachusetts, Erin (and Eli) Pease of Williamsburg, Massachusetts, Robert Archambault of Annapolis, Maryland, and Zachary Archambault of Worthington, Massachusetts, and her step grandchildren, Geoff Cicatiello of Harrisville and Matt Cicatiello of Cranston. She was a proud “gramma” to her two great grandchildren, Emma and Aiden Jeffrey. She was so excited about and looking forward to the birth of her third great grandchild who is due to arrive any day now. Evelyn also leaves her brother, Donald Enos and his wife Ann of Smithfield and her sister, Gail Alarie of La Plata, Maryland. She was predeceased by her sister, Gloria Enos. Evelyn was devoted to her family and was a tremendous support to her children and grandchildren. Lending her support and care to anyone who needed it. If you showed up at her house and she already had several guests for dinner, she would insist on pulling up a chair and setting a place for anyone else who happened to show up. She enjoyed playing Scrabble, Rummikub or any other card game. In the past several years, some of us would gather in her home on Thursday nights to have dinner and play Rummikub. Sadly, COVID restrictions limited the times we could do this in the past year. Evelyn was a lifelong communicant of St. Michael’s Church in Smithfield. She was strong in her faith and regularly attended mass until COVID restrictions made this impossible. Even then, she faithfully tuned in to watch the weekly mass online and received holy communion in her home. Evelyn was actively involved in the Social Justice Committee at church and, prior to her illness, volunteered regularly at the food pantry, ham and bean or spaghetti suppers, or other functions going on at the church. She cherished her friendships that she made at church. Above all else, her biggest joy was having her family together. Due to COVID restrictions visitation and burial will be private. Her funeral mass will be held on Thursday, March 4th at 9:30 a.m. at St. Michael’s Church, 80 Farnum Pike, Smithfield, RI 02917. Masks and social distancing are required. Seating will be at reduced capacity due to COVID restrictions. An internet viewing will be available at the time of the service, online at the St. Michael’s Youtube page.
