86, of Johnston passed away peacefully on January 25, 2020, at Fatima Hospital after a long battle with COPD. He was the husband of the late Irene Bonaventure (Dorio) for almost 50 years.
Born in Central Falls, he was a son of the late Leo and Rose (Daniel) Bonaventure.
After graduating from Cranston High School in 1951, Mr. Bonaventure enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was deployed to Korea and served with valor and distinction with the 7th Marine Division. During his time in Korea, he was awarded three Purple Hearts for wounds incurred in combat, as well as The Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal (NCM) with “V” for an “exceedingly heroic act that occurred while in active combat with an opposing force.”
Mr. Bonaventure was a Teamster with Local 251 for 40 years before retiring. He was a life member of VFW Post 2812. Mr. Bonaventure enjoyed ballroom dancing with his wife Irene, hunting, bowling, and in his later years, his “not to be missed” daily cowboy television shows and lottery scratch tickets.
Mr. Bonaventure leaves four children, Paul and his wife Jeanine of Middlebury, CT, Glen of St. Petersburg, FL, Michael and his wife Rhonda of Cranston, and Lori Bruno of Johnston. He was predeceased by his son Peter. He was the brother of Rose Giuntoli of Cranston, Margaret Paolino and her husband William of Foxboro, MA, Ernest Bonaventure and his wife Mary of Scituate, RI, the late Leo Bonaventure Jr., and the late Robert Bonaventure. He also leaves seven grandchildren who will miss their Papa very much.
His funeral will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2020, at 10 a.m. from the ROBBINS FUNERAL HOME, 2251 Mineral Spring Avenue, North Providence, RI, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Robert Bellarmine Church, 1804 Atwood Avenue, Johnston. Burial will follow at the Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Exeter, RI. VISITING HOURS Wednesday, 4-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
