Smith, Edward J., 82, formerly of Foster and Cranston, a retired New England and Nynex Telephone Company engineer, died January 10, 2011 in North Ft. Myers, FL. Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Albert J. and Ellen (Sarty) Smith.

Mr. Smith was a graduate of Cranston High School and attended New England Tech and the Community College of RI. He was a Navy veteran of WWII and an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, as well as a member of the Rhode Island State Guard. He coached in Cranston and Foster for many years and was an assistant coach at both Cranston East and West High Schools. He also coached in the CLCF and Pop Warner Leagues. He was a member of the Providence Turners and participated in their gymnastic and volleyball programs. He enjoyed camping, walking trails, canoeing and hunting.

Edward is survived by three sons, Joseph E. Smith of Providence, Edward J. and James T. Smith, both of Coventry, 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He was the devoted friend of Marguerite Sweeney. He was father of the late Robert E. Smith and brother of the late Raymond H. and Harold P. Smith.

His funeral and burial will be private.
