Baker, Carleton S. "Carty", 89, of North Providence died Saturday, August 30, 2008 at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center. He was the husband of the late Wilma (Dohring) Baker. Born in Smithfield he was a son of the late Walter S. and Lillie K. (Robinson) Baker. He had resided in North Providence for 81 years.
He was a former athlete at Central High School having won the state wrestling championship in 1936 and 1937. Mr. Baker had worked for 40 years at H & H Screw Products in Lincoln before retiring. He was a member of the Allendale Baptist Church and was active in many church organizations. He was an Army veteran of WWII and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. He was a member of the VFW Post 10011 in Lymansville.
He leaves a daughter Carla L. Gardner of Smithfield, two sons Carleton S. Baker, Jr. of The Dalles, OR and Dennis A. Baker of Burrillville, seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. He was brother of the late W. Robinson, Donald L., and Gerald A. Baker, Dorothy E. Hoar, Margaret B. Hodgins, Cecelia B. Dixon, and Eleanor B. Miller.
His funeral will be held Wednesday at 10 AM in the ROBBINS FUNERAL HOME, 2251 Mineral Spring Ave, North Providence. Burial with military honors will be in the RI Veterans Cemetery. Calling hours Tuesday 4-7 PM.
