Smith, Anne K. "Nan" (Cafferty), 82, of Cocoa Beach, FL and Greenville, died October 23, 2009 at RI Hospital. She was the wife of the late Harold J. Smith. Born in Providence, she was a daughter of the late Francis H. and Helen (Mahoney) Cafferty.
A graduate of North Providence High School, Anne worked as a cashier for Almacs and A & P Supermarkets, as well as several jobs in the textile industry, and was the former owner and proprietor of Smith's Galley Fish & Chips in North Providence. Known as "Nan" to her friends, and "Gramma Nan" to a legion of grandchildren, nieces and nephews, she was the matriarch of the extended Cafferty-Smith families and the organizer of many family traditions and activities. Anne was a lifetime summer resident of Roy Carpenter's Beach, and a staple of that community's legendary "Garden Club". She traveled extensively, and in recent years was a board member and Social Coordinator at Driftwood Villas in Cocoa Beach, Florida.
She leaves three sons, Harold J. Smith Jr. of Harrisville, Stephen E. Smith of Smithfield, Daniel G. Smith of Studio City, CA, three daughters, Cynthia DiNobile of Glocester, Bette Cotter of Glendale, CA, and Sandra DeAngelis of North Providence, a brother, John Cafferty of North Providence, a sister, Carol Mason of Greenville, and twelve grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Francis and William Cafferty and Mary Sharpe.
Her funeral will be held Wednesday at 8:15 am from the Robbins Funeral Home, 2251 Mineral Spring Ave., North Providence with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am in St. Philip Church, Putnam Pike, Greenville. Burial will follow in the RI Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Calling hours Tuesday 4-8 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jay G. Lawrence Foundation, PO Box 580, Greenville, RI 02828.
