Mercier, A. Donald, 89, of Greenville, died June 5, 2018 at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center surrounded by loved ones. He was the husband of Claire E. (Lowell) Mercier. Born in Smithfield, he was a son of the late Adolphe and Ida (Theroux) Mercier.
Donald was the owner of Greenville Business Accounting and Taxes since 1950, having graduated from Bryant University in 1951 and LaSalle Academy in 1946. He was a member of both the Rhode Island and the National Associations of Public Accountants. He also was an executive for Providence Gas Company for 38 years, retiring in 1990, and was a founder and member of their retirees association.
Donald served in the US Navy in both WWII and the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the VFW #2929, Smithfield and the American Legion, Balfour Cole Post. He was active in scouting, and was a committee commissioner for Troop 3, Greenville and a Cubmaster of Pack 4, Greenville. He also was a member of the Smithfield Historical Society and the St. Vincent DePaul Society. He, with his wife Claire, played Santa and Mrs. Claus on many occasions.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, Patricia Mercier Williams and her husband Allen of Cumberland, Richard Mercier and family, and four grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Ernest Mercier.
His funeral will be held Saturday at 8:30AM from the Robbins Funeral Home, 2251 Mineral Spring Ave. North Providence, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30AM in St. Philip Church, 622 Putnam Pike, Greenville. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Park, Johnston. Calling hours Friday 4-7PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hope Hospice and Palliative Care, 1085 North Main St., Providence, RI 02904 or St. Vincent DePaul Society at St. Philip Church.
